Shellvester’s Ripple of Courage
Once upon a brew of a hot summer day, a joyous chatter echoed from a pool nestled in a suburban backyard. The origin of the noise wasn’t neighborhood children or trivial adult gossip, but the animated pool toys with personalities as vibrant as the summer sun itself.
Among these were Shellvester, an amiable turtle floaty with a heart as vast as the ocean, and Lionardo Roarlore, a magnificent lion floaty whose might sent shivers through the ripples of the pool. Every time Lionardo roared, the toys would scatter, their cheerful chatter silenced and their joy replaced by fear.
Shellvester hated witnessing his friends’ terror and knew he had to stem this tide of fear. He devised a plan that, with its very proposal, would demonstrate Lionardo’s unfavorable behavior.
Shellvester, after weeks of secret endurance training with Noodlorian – an old, wise pool noodle – was ready. He gathered all the pool toys and, taking a deep breath, yelled out his challenge to Lionardo – a race across the length of the pool.
The next day, as the sun was at its zenith, all the toys gathered around the pool’s edges. With a countdown from Noodlorian, Lionardo and Shellvester shot off. Lionardo, in his overconfidence, started robustly, pulling ahead with a massive splash. He peered over his shoulder, expecting Shellvester to be lagging, but found the turtle keeping pace, determination etched on his face.
Halfway through the race, Lionardo began to slow, while Shellvester remained steady, his weeks of tireless training paying off. The finale had Lionardo gasping in disbelief as Shellvester, with a last surge of strength, crossed the finish line, the cheer from the pool toys echoing through the still afternoon air.
Shellvester’s victory sent a clear message to all the pool toys. Lionardo had been defeated, yet he did not change. He was still the bully, still domineering, only now, he was not feared. Shellvester had shown the toys that a bully only had as much power as one was willing to give them — that they could choose to stand up and rise above the fear.
The story of Shellvester’s courage pulsed in every ripple of the pool, quite literally rewriting the pool’s dynamic. Lionardo’s reign still existed but in another form – a form that was now bereft of fear, a form that came from the heart of one friendly turtle floaty named Shellvester.
